Chicago Lawyers Publication Recognizes Accomplishment of Ed Walsh

The October 1999 Edition of the Chicago Lawyer publication is devoted to a survey of lawsuit settlements valued at $1 Million Dollars or more. The survey is divided between Cook County/Chicago settlements and Downstate settlements. The Downstate settlements are those which resulted from lawsuits being filed in all circuit courts in the State of Illinois, outside of Cook County/Chicago.

Author Kate Marquess interviewed Ed Walsh and reported:

Edward J. Walsh is the only attorney with three Downstate settlements in Chicago Lawyers 1999 Million-Dollar Settlement Survey. Walsh totaled $4.09 Million Dollars in settlements.
No other attorney or firm had more than two big settlements outside Cook County.

The publication went on to report and discuss the following settlements which Ed secured for recognition in the Million-Dollar Settlement Survey: Murray v. R.A. Bright Construction Co., Will County Circuit Court, $1.9 Million Dollars; Patricia Zych v. City Bank Corporation, DuPage County Circuit Court, $1.19 Million Dollars; and Lazzari v. Drs. Pickett and OLeary and Midwest Internists, DuPage County Circuit Court, $1 Million Dollars.

The settlements in these cases represent record-setting settlements in the areas of automobile collisions, premises liability and medical malpractice cases. In addition to these cases, during 1998-99, Ed has secured total settlements for his clients exceeding $6 Million Dollars. Through the use of professionally organized mock trials, computer technology, litigation support software, and experienced lawyering skills, Ed Walsh and his firm were able to single themselves out as being the only attorney and law firm outside of Cook County/Chicago to secure three monetary settlements each in excess of $1 Million Dollars.

$5.25 Million Products Liability Settlement

Ed Walsh & Partner settled, through mediation, Cook County Circuit Court case Doe vs. SuperFlow Corporation 04 L 12210. This products liability and construction negligence case involved a needless fuel explosion and fire resulting in catastrophic third degree burns to their client, a 17 year old boy.

Ed & Partner were able to provide hope and protected financial security for their young client by using their skilled deposition discovery techniques and consultation with electrical engineers, fire-explosion, vocational economist and life care planning experts. Most significantly, through consultation with their internet information technology expert, Ed and the Firm's litigation team were able to uncover more than ten years of the defendant product manufacturers old archived web sites.

Through this creative and innovative electronic discovery, they found critical substantive documents posted on the defendant product manufacturers old web sites. These evidentiary documents were critical to the key product liability issues in the case. During two extensive mediation sessions, the defendants web site documents and the catastrophic injuries suffered by the Firms young client were digitally and effectively presented with the use of Sanction evidentiary exhibit presentation software. Details of this case may be found on the Firms web site. Ed's extensive mediation submission and certain accompanying documents can be viewed by clicking the following link: Mediation Memorandum. 2003 Jury Verdict - $480,000 in Herniated Disc Case

Partner and Jim Knippen recently ended a week on trial in mid-January, 2003, which resulted in a verdict of $478,280.73 for their client. The defense had refused to make any offer to settle the suit. The case concerned a 40 year-old woman who was in an automobile collision and suffered a herniated disc. The issue in the case revolved around an eight-month delay before she went to any physicians office for treatment. Partner and Jim were able to show, through the testimony of a number of witnesses, that the delay was in keeping with the plaintiffs personality and that she had exhibited symptoms of back pain during the interim time.

The plaintiff was a homemaker, and through the use of an expert witness at trial, they were able to demonstrate the monetary value of the services she was no longer able to perform at home as a result of her injuries. The law office wishes to thank all of the members of its staff, whose teamwork approach makes innovative trial work on behalf of our clients a goal we can achieve.
